Number Coding Decoding - Analogical

Analogical coding with numerical digits involves the method of coding where the letters of alphabets are allotted numerical values and the pattern of coding is based on the analogy of the example given in the question. There are no set of principles or  patterns involved. Candidates are required to study the examples given before getting started with the exercise.

Example 1 : If SELDOM is coded as 1 2 4 3 6 5, how will you code the following words?

(A) DOES                  (B) SOLE                         (C) LED              (D) DOLE                  (E) LODE                         (F) ODE

Options :

(A) (1) 3 6 2 1 (2) 6 2 3 1 (3) 1 6 3 2 (4) 6 2 1 3
(B) (1) 1 4 6 2 (2) 1 6 4 2 (3) 1 4 2 6 (4) 1 6 2 4
(C) (1) 4 3 2 (2) 3 2 4 (3) 4 2 3 (4) 4 2 6
(D) (1) 3 6 4 1 (2) 3 6 4 2 (3) 3 6 2 4 (4) 3 6 4 1
(E) (1) 4 6 2 3 (2) 4 6 3 2 (3) 6 3 2 4 (4) 4 3 6 2
(F) (1) 6 2 3 (2) 2 3 6 (3) 6 3 2 (4) 6 3 4

Solution: If SELDOM stand for code 124365 which means S = 1, E = 2, I = 4, D = 3,O = 6, and M = 5. Based on this analogy, the correct answer will be.

(A) (1)             (B) (2)                (C) (3)              (D) (2)            (E) (2)                (F) (3)

Example 2  : If 1 3 4 8 2 6 7 5 9 is the code for O B S E R V A N T how will you code the following words?

(A) SERVANT             (B) SOBER                  (C) BENT           (D) OVATE                   (E) ORATE                   (F) NOTES

Options :

(A) (1) 4 8 2 6 7 5 9 (2) 4 8 2 6 7 6 0 (3) 4 8 2 6 7 5 0 (4) 4 2 8 6 7 5 9
(B) (1) 4 1 3 8 2 (2) 4 1 3 8 1 (3) 4 3 1 8 2 (4) 4 1 3 2 8
(C) (1) 3 8 9 5 (2) 3 8 5 9 (3) 3 5 8 9 (4) 9 8 3 5
(D) (1) 1 7 6 9 8 (2) 1 7 6 8 9 (3) 1 6 7 9 8 (4) 9 8 7 6 1
(E) (1) 1 7 2 9 8 (2) 1 2 7 9 8 (3) 1 2 7 8 9 (4) 8 9 2 7 1
(F) (1) 9 1 5 8 4 (2) 5 1 9 84 (3) 5 9 1 8 4 (4) 8 4 9 1 5

Solution : In the example, you will observe O = 1, B = 3, S = 4, E = 8 R = 2, V = 6, A =7, N = 5 and T = 9. Based on this analogy the correct answers will be:

(A) (1)                 (B) (1)           (C) (2)           (D) (3)              (E) (2)              (F) (2)

Example 3 : If  FRANCE is coded as 1 3 9 2 5 6, INDIA is coded as 4 2 7 4 9 , how will you code FINANCE ?

(a) 1 4 2 9 2 5 6             (b)  1 4 2 8 2 5 6           (c) 1 5 2 9 2 5 6           (d)  1 4 2 9 2 7 6

Answer : (a)

Solution : If  FRANCE is coded as 1 3 9 2 5 6, INDIA is coded as 4 2 7 4 9, then the code of FINANCE is

F R A N C E
1 3 9 2 5 6

I N D I A
4 2 7 4 9

We find that the code of F is 1, R is 3, A is 9, N is 2, C is 5, E is 6, I is 4, D is 7.

F I N A N C E
1 4 2 9 2 5 6

So, the code FINANCE is 1 4 2 9 2 5 6.

Example 4 : If  CAT is coded as 3 5 4, TONG is coded as 4 2 1 7 , how will you code MANGO ?

(a)  8 5 1 7 2       (b)  8 4 1 6 7         (c)   8 3 1 7 2           (d)  8 3 1 8 3

Answer : (a)

Solution :  If  CAT is coded as 3 5 4, TONG is coded as 4 2 1 7 , then the code of  MANGO  is

C A T
3 5 4

T O N G
4 2 1 7

Then,

M A N G O
8 5 1 7 2

So, the answer is 8 5 1 7 2.

Example 5 : If  BOARD is coded as 3 8 5 9 7, how will you code ROAD ?

(a)  9  7 5 4        (b)   8 9 5 7         (c)   9 8 5 7        (d)  7 8 5 9

Answer : (c)

Solution :  If  BOARD is coded as 3 8 5 9 7, then the code of ROAD is

B O A R D
3 8 5 9 7

THEN,

R O A D
9 8 5 7

So, the answer is 9 8 5 7.

Example 6If in a certain language A is coded as 1, B is coded as 2, C is coded as 3 and so on, how is BIDDIC coded in that language?

(a) 294493            (b) 284563               (c) 375582            (d) 394492

Solution   (a)  As given the letters are coded as

A B C D E F G H I
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9

So, in BIDDIC, B is coded as 2, I as 9, D as 4 and C as 3. Thus, BIDDIC is coded as 294493.

Example 7:  In a certain code, 15789 is written as XTZAL and 2346 is written as NPSU. How is 23549 written in that code?

(a) NPTUL        (b) PNTSL      (c) NPTSL         (d) NBTSL

Solution  (c) Looking into the method of coding, it is clear that 2 is coded as N, 3 as P, 5 as T, 4 as S and 9 as L. So, 23549 is coded as NPSTL
